The problem however, is that's all Sean has been doing. Forced to hide who and what he is from the world, Sean's life has become a fairly meaningless existence.

But after an unexpected weekend with a rather willing woman, Sean suddenly realizes that there's a lot more to life than an endless stream of criminals and vengeance. It's time to let someone else punish the guilty.

It's time to start enjoying life.

Spoiler Warning Contains harem, violence, bad language, and a fair amount of partying.

This story is not a serious super hero story, but a little closer to a "Penthouse Letter with Super Powers." It was fun to read, and a couple scenes had me wanting to go jump my wife, but it was missing some of the elements that are usually taken more seriously in supers novels.

For one thing, the author left out a fair amount of detail on some of the most critical fights and situations the protagonist had to deal with. Usually, in these sorts of novels, that is THE most important parts. I'm not sure if it was a point of his design, or what, but the sex scenes got a LOT of detail, and the foe who gave him the biggest fight of the novel wasn't even really described. We were told about his incredible action conflicts later, "but for now, let's peer in our protagonist while he's screwing his house slave." I think novelist was just attempting to focus on the relationships in the protagonist's life, rather than the usual action sugar.

Technically, the novel wasn't bad, but there were issues. Plot-wise, the pacing wasn't outstanding. This novel felt like 20 short stories taped together. Because the protagonist never seemed to be in dire conditions, for the most part, there were no real worry-ratcheting moments. I never felt unsure that the protagonist was going to win. Also, grammar and spelling were great in the first half or so, and then the author kind of fell off on that aspect...apostrophes used poorly, word choice errors, etc. We began to mourn the death of his editor at around 50%, almost exactly.

Overall, not a bad novel. I had fun reading it, which is the main thing.

Shadow eBook Jan Stryvant Reviews

Shadow is a cat, with a cat's attitude, what's mine is mine (especially when it comes to his women). You can't say he's morally ambiguous because he's got a code of honor, but many issues would have a church lady clutch her pearls and beat a hasty if not somewhat embarrased retreat. Shadow is the Top Cat in his domain. If you want a fast paced page Turner you'll enjoy this book.
Shadow is an unusual anti-hero story with many glaring flaws. My rating of three stars is a fair reflection of numerous concerns that I had with the book. First, the author described the main character as a semi-shapeshifter who can adopt the shape of a humanoid black cat, among other forms (that weren't really described in any length or detail). And the author kept calling the MC a "leopard." Some 70% into the book, the author finally wised up and called him a "panther." To me, this was really sloppy and made it seem like the writer didn't know the difference between a leopard and a panther; that reflected poorly on his credibility.

Second, the story was from the MC's perspective, but I felt the writer did a poor job of fleshing out his background. Yes, some 90% of the way into the book, the author finally committed a chapter or two to the MC's "origin." But it felt like too little, too late. Moreover, the origin didn't truly explain to the reader how the spirit of the cat emerged from the MC's consciousness.

Third, the story was somewhat similar to Deadpool film in terms of the narrow, slice of life focus. On the other hand, the story spanned over a 10-year timeframe, and I felt like there could have been more stories to tell as the MC matured. Essentially, a slice of life perspective and a long time frame doesn't mesh too well.

Finally, the author seemed really enthusiastic in writing out the voluminous sex scenes in this book. But surprisingly, none of the scenes were notable or memorable. Perhaps, he should have read 50 Shades of Grey for inspiration, because the adult scenes in this book were rather dull.

Due to the graphic violence and sex scenes, Shadow is strictly for a mature readership.
In some ways this was somewhat hard to get into as you don't know if you want to like Sean/Shadow but while I wondered how sane he is, I found that I wanted to see where the author was going with him.

Still the story pulled me in and while I have doubts about Sean's sanity, I found that I liked him and consider him "one of the good guys" even while Sean doubts that he's "one of the good guys".
3 reasons to buy...This was my forth sci\fi book. 1. There was good character development of the main characters -kept the book engaging 2. The book was a good length which kept you guessing to the next set of events and kept the story lively and interesting. 3. The book was fun, the idea of 'supers' and humans co mingling was a different play and made the story move better. There was a few chapter that were short- intro problem and her is solution and now we are on to next page - if those pieces were to set new book, fine- otherwise kinda wondered why in story when 80% done. Definitely 4 stars- encourage you to read.
I liked this book because the MC was not your typical hero. He kept his own morals and anything that got in his way died. I was fine with the harem and violence themes of this story. I also enjoyed how the MC interacted with all the other characters. If you like that kind of story this is a book for you.
I enjoyed this book as I’ve enjoyed all of Stryvant’s novels, but I’m not quite sure what to make of it. On the most superficial level, it’s a super hero novel—but the tone is very different than most super hero stories I have read. On another level, it’s a novel about a criminal working his way through the underworld on his own terms. In yet another light, it’s the story of a young man who suffered terrible abuse as a child getting his life together—even if the life he constructs is far from typical. All of that may be reading way too much in Stryvant’s narrative, because mostly this is a tale of pretty tough super who has sex with just about everyone he meets. He has so much sex that it gets in the way of the story and takes up space you would have liked to have seen devoted to other aspects of the tale—especially the fight scenes and the development of the bad guys so that they could have become three dimensional. That being said, we do get to follow Shadow through several years of his life and watch him grow and evolve as he finds his place in the world. It’s an enjoyable journey and one that I might read again in a few months.
